Chuck Chauncey?: Six Students Answer Three Questions About our Buck-Toothed Buddy

Chauncey the Beaver is a unique mascot. The buck-toothed being doesn’t exactly strike fear in those who look upon him. We see him walking around during Orientation or Spirit Week and we wonder how we got this cute creature to represent Champlain. However, we sometimes wonder what it would be like if another animal took the place of the benevolent beaver.

After you’re done reading, make sure to tweet us @champcrossover to let us know which animal choice is your favorite!

Brianna Guest, Class of 2021

Do you like Chauncey?

“Yes. He’s very fun. Very…beaver?”

Do you like the fact that he’s a beaver?

“Yes. I think beavers are good mascots.”

If Chauncey were a different animal, what would you choose? Why/why not?

“An otter. Otters are also fun and not serious animals.”

Felisa Charles, Class of 2019

Do you like Chauncey?

“Sure. I mean he’s the school mascot. Nothing special.”

Do you like the fact that he’s a beaver?

“Yeah, there’s no reason not to, although it would be nice to have an animal native to Vermont.”

If Chauncey were a different animal, what would you choose? Why/why not?

“A bunny” *laughs* “a rabbit or something, or a kangaroo [because] kangaroos are cooler and they can kick. Chauncey is very boring for a beaver.”

Bryan Richardson, Class of 2020

Do you like Chauncey?

“I mean yeah, why wouldn’t I?”

Do you like the fact that he’s a beaver?

“Why would that be a problem?”

If Chauncey were a different animal, what would you choose? Why/why not?

“I really don’t know to be honest with you. Maybe a fox….I mean foxes are seen as common animals when it comes to cold climates.”

Celeste Levy, Class of 2022

Do you like Chauncey?

“Yes.”

Do you like the fact that he’s a beaver?

“Yes, I do, because beavers are cute.”

If Chauncey were a different animal, what would you choose? Why/why not?

“A lake monster because it’s relevant to the lore of Lake Champlain.”

Olivia Vittitow, Class of 2019

Do you like Chauncey?

“Yeah.”

Do you like the fact that he’s a beaver?

“Yes. I think it’s a funny mascot. It’s original.”

If Chauncey were a different animal, what would you choose? Why/why not?

“An otter because it’s similar to a beaver but seems slightly funnier.”

Miranda Rodriguez, Class of 2021

Do you like Chauncey?

“I think he’s a beaver. I don’t think he’s the coolest mascot. I think we could do better.”

Do you like the fact that he’s a beaver?

“No.”

If Chauncey were a different animal, what would you choose? Why/why not?

“Something that would be so much cooler and so much better because of the lake is Champ. We could have one of those Chinese dragon things. It would be dope.”

Well, Champlain community, you’ve heard from your peers! What do you think beats the beaver?
