In honor of the thirty-year anniversary of The Nightmare Before Christmas hitting the theaters, the film has been re-released to select theaters across the US and Canada as of October 20th. For a limited time, viewers can experience Halloween Town and the adventures of Jack, Sally, Zero, and many more on the big screen again.
Originally conceived by Tim Burton (known for other films such as Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice) and directed by Henry Selleck, The Nightmare Before Christmas tells the story of Jack Skellington as he tries to find a solution to his boredom with Halloween. Eventually, Jack discovers the existence of Christmas Town and becomes obsessed with creating his own version of Christmas, despite the hesitation of some of the residents of Halloweentown. The songs and scores for the film were written by Danny Elfman, known for his work with the band Oingo Boingo and his vast career in film scoring. Elfman, in addition to providing the music, also provides the singing voice for Jack in all of the character’s songs.
When originally released in 1993, The Nightmare Before Christmas was a moderate success, earning praise for its innovative use of stop-motion animation. However, in the years after, the success of the film has only grown as the film has developed a large cult following. As a result, the film was rereleased multiple times in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and once again rereleased in 2020. In addition to the rerelease, Disney is also hosting various The Nightmare Before Christmas events and attractions at many of their worldwide parks and on the company’s cable networks.
Although the film is not currently scheduled for release in Burlington, the Sunset Drive-In in Colchester, VT has confirmed they will be screening the film. If you happen to miss The Nightmare Before Christmas in theaters, the film and its sing-along version are always located on Disney’s streaming platform Disney +.
